SapphireOne at a Glance — From 1986 to Today

Let us take you on a walk down memory lane.
Recently, our long-standing customer and good friend James Brown of Bordo International uncovered hundreds of SapphireOne version floppy disks and CDs in his archives, dating back to when he first became our client in 1995.
James very kindly mailed us a sample of these original disks, instantly transporting the SapphireOne team back through decades of development, innovation, and change.
1986 — Where It All Began
Back in 1986, SapphireOne — then simply known as Sapphire — released its very first version. At the time, the core modules were completely separate applications:
- Financials
- Payroll
- Assets
A single software compile could take over 12 hours, and updates were distributed to clients on 30 individual floppy disks per release. Clients would manually load each disk to complete an upgrade.
Due to this time-intensive and manual process, Sapphire releases were limited to only a handful of updates each year.
From Floppy Disks to CD-ROM
As technology advanced and the CD-ROM era arrived, Sapphire releases were consolidated onto a single CD. This dramatically improved both compile times and the client upgrade experience.
Updates became faster to deploy, easier to install, and significantly more reliable — marking a major milestone in Sapphire’s evolution.
The 2000s — Becoming SapphireOne
In 2001, Sapphire officially became SapphireOne, following the unification of Financials, Payroll, and Assets into a single integrated application.
Two years later, in 2003, the now-recognisable SapphireOne aqua logo was introduced. While often mistaken for a Yin & Yang symbol, the logo is in fact a merge of the “S” and “O”, representing unity and new beginnings — much like a single cell dividing into two.
All the Way to 2020
Fast forward to 2020, and SapphireOne has evolved into a fully integrated, global software platform comprising eight core modules, all accessible within one application:
- Accounts
- Inventory
- Job Projects
- Asset Management
- Payroll / HR
- Management
- Utilities
- Document Management
Today, software compiles take minutes rather than hours, and SapphireOne releases weekly updates that clients can download instantly via secure servers.
Reflecting on the journey from floppy disks to real-time updates highlights just how far both technology — and SapphireOne — have come.
